Techno was since the early 80ies and still is one of the most common terms for music and thus, hard to find an exact description for. In today's meaning, Techno usually describes a raw, repetitive, monotonous, mostly instrumental kind of 4/4 kickdrum oriented electronic music between 120 and 150 BpM. Early innovators mostly hailed from Detroit (Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, Daniel Bell) and Germany (Westbam, Sven Väth, Thomas P. Heckmann, Wolfgang Voigt), where clubs like the Tresor in Berlin and the Omen in Frankfurt, as well as first huge, official raves as Mayday and the Loveparade made the genre highly popular. During the 90ies rave period, some of the most popular artists were Carl Cox, Chris Liebing, Dave Clarke, Luke Slater, Gayle San, Umek and Adam Beyer. All mentioned artists are still active today, however, there has been a strong tendence to Minimal from the early 2000's on. Besides them, popular artists today are DJ Rush, Richie Hawtin, Paul Kalkbrenner, Trentemoller, James Holden and the artists close to the Berghain club in Berlin such as Len Faki, Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann. show less
