BCR (on 92.8fm) started broadcasting as a pirate in 1988 to parts of South London U.K. on Friday nights. Lasting for about a year until our final transmission on 18/08/89. BCR (on 92.8fm) started broadcasting as a pirate in 1988 to parts of South London U.K. on Friday nights. Lasting for about a year until our final transmission on 18/08/89. During our time on air we broadcast an unique selection of jazz, soul & funk which wasn't available on legal radio in the U.K. at that time. Although this was to change and a few stations did receive licenses which just about killed quality soul & funk pirate radio overnight . Along with harsh penalties if you were caught many stations (us included) decided to call it a day.... and then BCR returned.......
In 1999 we discovered the wonders of the Internet and after much effort, produced some rather dodgy streams. By September 2000 we had it sussed and went 24 hours a day with non stop deep funk, with a low quality 24k stereo stream. We stayed with the low quality stream for a year or so and received many emails from happy listeners, other radio stations, television stations, club promoters, artists and presenters from the 80's pirate scene.
Around August 2002 it was time to give the station a more professional look for our new status and we purchased the domain www.globalfunkradio.com , since then the name has stuck and everybody calls us Global Funk Radio rather than BCR. Things started to get tough for Internet radio around this time and many stations folded, we expanded and made our modem stream 32k and also added a 56k stereo stream for those who had a better web connection. We also teamed up with Radio Electro who were running the ground breaking Dr. Skunkensteins Soundlab on a Sunday, together we both provided more than enough streams for this much in demand show. Although it was a major change in direction for the station we felt after all a just one as many like us found Funk and Jazz listening to Electro, Hip Hop and the break beats etc. in the early eighties.
Sadly in May 2003 Mike at Radio Electro decided to call it a day due to work commitments, which left us as the only station relaying the Soundlab and a massive gap in the market for Electro on the radio. So we thought maybe now was the time to start playing more of the electro, thanks to Mike, DJ Fizz, Reeno, Dr. Skunkenstein, Stjarna, Morphogenetic, Diplomat, Medooza, Bot23, blipHOPjunkie, Ib.Ip, and others, while still playing the best Jazz and Funk around.
Stay tuned the story continues.........
