Jellybean Recordings is an independent label designed around the concept that dance music needs to be more than simply an endless stream of faceless dubs in order to truly thrive as an enduring artform. "I remember the days when you could walk into almost any club and hear great songs and great vocals," says the company's founder and president John "Jellybean" Benitez. "I formed this label with the belief that I was not the only person hungry for that again in dance music."
And with that, Jellybean Recordings was born. On the strength of a roster that includes rising performers like Antoinette Roberson, Darryl D'Bonneau, and Karel, the legendary producer/DJ is being proven right. The label has scored a string of club hits, most notably Roberson's Pulse hits "The Lover That You Are" and "I Won't Give Up My Music," which have transcended dancefloors and earned active crossover radio airplay.
Jellybean Recordings is not, however, ignoring the dark vibe of the underground.
The label also boasts a line-up of young producers and remixers that include Soul Solution, 95 North, and Brinsley Evans who are playing key roles in developing trends. The difference between Jellybean's producers and others is a desire and talent to also become formidable songwriters. "It's not enough to make a record of just beats and loops," Jellybean says.
