The idea of Island Records, founded 1959 by Chris Blackwell and Graeme Goodall was mainly to distribute Jamaican music to immigrants in UK. Because of a strong focus on rock music most of the jamaican artists were moved to the side project Trojan Records. Despite this the label signed in 1972 The Wailers. After a history of changing distribution deals, e.g. with Warner Music Group or Atlantic and the founding of countless sublabels for different music genres, they were finally sold to PolyGram, resp. Universal Music and ventured with Def Jam to the Island Def Jam Music Group.
Island Records was home for countless influential musicians like U2, Grace Jones, Roxy Music, Tom Waits or The Killers. Beyond their current artists you can find Chikinki, Fall Out Boy, Sam Sparro and Amy Winehouse.
2009 is the 50th anniversary of the label: so you can expect a lot!
