Austria’s biggest festival for electronic art and music turns Graz into the place to experience vivid pop-culture from the 20th May: springnine dedicates five days and four nights to the art of DJing and clubculture.
With its keen curiosity and its global approach, springnine presents a line-up full of electronic top artists, superstar-DJS and electropop-darlings. Young creatives from the local scene join extraordinary artists from across the globe. For the ninth time, springfestival exhibits forward-looking electronic music in all its varieties.
City Sounds and label nights combine the fresh and most thrilling movements straight from ground-breaking studios and vibrant scenes. A late night walk takes you from São Paolo to Paris, London can be found around the corner to Linz, European Capital of Culture 2009, while sounds of Berlin are brought to Graz via the residents of Berghain. It is one of the most renowned – if not the most influential – clubs for electronic music. The world is a mirror ball to springnine, reflecting the bright glittering spectrum of innovation to mainstream. All you can dance.
springnine loves euphoria. Elation kicks in as beats tickle and feet get into the groove. springfestival is Austria’s biggest festival for clubculture. For all the program’s superlatives, the guests’ comfort and well-being are given top priority: An audience of 20.000 people and more than 200 DJs, musicians and visual artists enjoy the extraordinarily chilled atmosphere.
springnine lives electronic culture. Closely linked to the line-up, springnine offers an intensive theoretic examination of electronic art and music in its program. With a series of lectures and in workshops in cooperation with the FH Joanneum (University of Applied Sciences) skills and techniques will be explored. And of course there will again be the fantastic Red Bull Academy Sessions with renowned artists sharing their experience face-to-face.
springnine keeps its ear to the ground. springnine discovers new playgrounds besides the festival’s main location in the middle of the mountain in the city’s centre and the favoured and well-established clubs ‘Postgarage’ and ‘ppc’. A number of new locations are especially adopted for the festival and expand the dance floor up to 14 locations.
springnine connects scenes. springfestival is the only festival in the region connecting all local (pop-)scenes, clubs and associations committed to electronic art and music.
Program and Artists at a glance
springfestival places emphasis on the interplay between audience and music since its foundation in 2001. To play live and perform the unique magic of electronic music means a lot to the participating artists. Many prefer to play live with eclectic tools and computer based special sequencers.
The Electronic Beats opening concerts will see Gossip, Karin Dreijer Andersson alias Fever Ray, Bodi Bill from Berlin and Fiago from Graz on the Kasematten stage on top of the Schloßberg.
Among the many highlights of this year’s festival are premieres, not just in the opening night. Look forward to appearances by: Mad Decent Soundsystem presents Diplo, Fake Blood, Boy 8-Bit, Radio Slave, The Japanese Popstars, WhoMadeWho, Jazzanova, Fennesz, James Yuill and Mix Hell with a very, very special surprise act. And that is only to name a few.
There will be as well: Laurent Garnier playing a full live show for the 1st time live in Austria.
World premiere of the brand new album „No Hassle“ by Tosca: Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber performing in the magnificent concert hall “Stefaniensaal”.

Label nights and special evenings
Acid! More than twenty years ago the sound of Acid emerged and swept across the dancefloors around the globe. Written off time and again, Acid lives to see its revival for the nth time. springnine is proud to welcome some living legends and pioneers of their guild. Members of the Acid Symphony Orchestra will hold a special Acid Machine workshop.
The sound of a city:Berlin. Following the specials dedicated to Detroit and Chicago in the last years,
springnine continues its series “The sound of a city”. This year, the focus is on Berlin. springnine features the probably most important city for electronic music at present.
Berghain/Berlin springnine will host the club in the most exciting club-metropolis these days.
Shantel presents exclusively and especially at springnine tracks of his new, upcoming album months before it will be released later this year.
Further highlights of the line-up include: Label Specials by G-Stone, Afro Acid, Warp Records, Bomb Squad and Stones Throw as well as Tiefparterre, Flex Schallplatten and the G-Stone Label, home of Kruder & Dorfmeister.
Another night will be celebrating the European Capital of Culture 2009, Linz: Musicians, DJs and VJs out of Linz will give guest performances in Graz, the European Capital of Culture 2003.
Regarding DJs, the line-up draws attention to the local underground-scene as well as to some of the celebrities in the international clubscene. springnine covers a wide range of insiders' tips from far-away places to guests from various clubscenes in Berlin, Paris and London. DJs working and living in Austria and its neighbouring countries will also join springnine.
