The Crystal Ark is a NYC-based (and inspired) psychedelic dance music group, the latest creative vision from artist, producer and synthesizer magician Gavin Russom. Russomʼs multimedia artworks have been presented in an international collection of museums, including Centre Pompidou, Palais de Tokyo, Temporäre Kunsthalle, MoMA, MoMA PS1, Sao Paulo Bienial and various other galleries, clubs and performance institutions.
He is also the “secret weapon” of NYC record label DFA Records. In addition to releasing the influential “The Days of Mars” and “Black Meteoric Star” records on that label, Russom helped pioneer the sound of their legendary in-house studio, designed and built special equipment from scratch, and played as a member of label founder James Murphyʼs band LCD Soundsystem.
Gavinʼs main conspirator in The Crystal Ark is a native New Yorker Viva Ruiz. A dancer, writer and director of tele-novelas, producer, all-around performer and a NYC nightlife legend, she has collaborated with Debbie Harry, BIG ART GROUP and The Citizens Band, and is a member of the performance troups Dazzle Dancers and Escandalo. Ruiz also directed the video for The Crystal Arkʼs first single, the electro-Latin-psych slow burner “The City Never Sleeps.”
Based on the success of that single and the mind-melting follow-up “The Tangible Presence of the
Miraculous,” both released by DFA in 2010, Russom and Ruiz have assembled an all-star group to perform The Crystal Arkʼs music live. The core group of musicians features Russom and Ruiz backed by DJ and engineer Matt Thornley (LCD Soundsystem/DFA), bassist Tyler Pope (LCD Soundsystem/!!!) and percussionist Alberto Lopez. Show less
