2008 has seen household names Nicol and Majistrate continue to surge from strength to strength, defying the ageing process that has caused so many of the scene's other older names to fall by the wayside. Placing strong emphasis on their new label and promotion in a bid to further their conquest of the jumpup scene, this talented duo's DJ profile has rocketed in the last year with bookings for big hitters Breakin` Science, One Nation and of course Innovation.
Although a union that dates back to 2003, both Nicol and Majistrate's individual standing in the scene pre-dates this by some distance; the latter's first production credits can be traced back to 1994 after a hookup with Daz of Cyndicut FM the year previously, whose label Splash Recordings would put out Majistrate's first 12 'Open Circuit'. The floodgates opened soon after, the man enjoying a glut of releases on Splash, Intalektive, Juice Records and A-Sides' mighty Eastside. Meanwhile despite having not entered the production arena, Nicol was busy making his own mark on the scene with a regular show on Cyndicut FM and in 2001, launched Direct Recordings in collaboration with fellow Innovation Artist Management member DJ Ollie.
Fast forwarding several years to the fresher side of the millennium, local Kent boys Nicol and Majistrate made the decision to form a creative partnership. Their first joint production credit dropped in 2003, gracing the catalogue of seminal imprint Shakedown with 'Expansion/Mental State'. Wasting little time acting off the back of this track's success, further releases dropped in the following years on Ram and Playaz offshoots Frequency and Frontline together with a spate of 12s on the legendary Urban Takeover and Bingo Beats brands respectively. The ball was well and truly rolling for this jumpup orientated pairing who began to enjoy a snowballing interest in their super-tight DJ skills accordingly, and a few years later the impetus was there for the next step up.
It was 2007 that would finally herald a move into label-management for Nicol and Majistrate, NAM Musik's glamorous inception accompanied by a huge launch party at London Drum & Bass Mecca Herbal; a polished and functional website would soon follow. The label's first year witnessed three releases by the pairing, ever conscious that quality always prevails over quantity especially during such a difficult climate for vinyl. As 2008 draws in, plans are in the pipeline for a first NAM album in November 2008 entitled 'Mission Statement'; a balanced selection of new releases and remixes from the pair as well as fresh material from other NAM artists including Cabbie, KG, Tantrum Desire and more artists still to be confirmed. The LP will be available in double CD format as well as three individual 12" vinyl releases, and promises to be the next chapter in the NAM takeover. Show less
