Nathaniel describes his unique style: " The things that I'm influenced by - you can have a tune that's described as a fusion of styles; but it really sounds like one part hip hop to two parts jazz - you can hear the seperate elements. Whereas what I'm really after is taking those influences so they're totally mixed, so that it doesn't sound like a patching together of genres. It becomes its own thing, a truly fused thing."
Recording as Natural Self for Tru-Thoughts expresses the importance he has always felt lies in the direct expression of drums. In both his solo and remix material, his work has been enthusiastically received and critically acclaimed by press and dj's alike. With three singles and a handful of remixes on Tru Thoughts under the name of Natural Self , one on Breakin' Bread in collaboration with The Hermit, and a selection of on going projects on his crew's Museum label; this is by all means an impressive discography to date.
When Music making ends the DJing starts. With a combination of his own and others music, Natural Self brings a dynamic heavy funk sound wherever he goes. DJ collaborations with fellow Tru-Thoughts artist Nostalgia 77 have lead on to co production and remix work of Quantic, whose 'Primate Boogaloo' remix was very well recieved.
The raw drum based funk of his debut 'Shakedown/Soulstep' was lauded by press and dj`s alike, giving a distinct taster of the confidence and originality to come. Furthermore, from the heavyweight thrashing, spikey monster that is his second outing 'Raise the Game', to the deep resonant horns and wailing sax of his third smasher `Solomon` ; Natural Self delivers the authentic funk pressure and keeps you guessing by adhering to a no rules policy.
