Martin Reed or DJ MartyR as he was coined by his mentor, began his DJ career in late 2001. It all started with a set of Numark turntables and a 2 channel Gemini mixer. While honing his craft under the tutelage of House DJ legends such as Dozia of Ovum Recordings, DeepC of then Tigerhook and constant encouragement from Platinum record producer and DJ; Phillip Charles, Martin continued to perform guest spots whenever and where ever he could. Finally in 2002 he got his first shot at a major gig at the legendary Philadelphia nightclub Tribecca opening up for Hector Romero. Soon after that in 2003 Martin was offered a residency at Lounge125 alongside mentor and DJ; Christian James of SoulsonMusic beginning the long lasting weekly event; Fly Fridays @ Lounge125. The place was an intimate space but quickly became the staple for house music in Philadelphia. The vibe was there and Fly Fridays was soon the hottest house music event to get into in the city.
During 2003 through 2004 Martin continued guest spots all over the city of Philadelphia including Paperstreet’s fabulous Mojito parties in Commerce Square alongside DJ Lucas Rivera of Bornill Recordings and DJ Cory Ayler as well as a second night residency at Lounge125 called Celebrity Sundays which he also shared with Cory Ayler.
In October of 2004 Martin was interviewed by and featured globally on CoolJunkie.com It wasn’t long after that exposure Martin headlined weekely and one-off events in most of Philadelphia’s major clubs of the time; most notably Transit, Metro Lounge, Suite 450, Tragos, L'Hexagone, The Mansion, Emerald City and Lounge125 just to name a few. Outside of Philadelphia; Studio Six and Nikki Beach sought out Martin for regular performances in 2004 & 2005. As well, during many of these events Martin & Cory Ayler spun together building a viral popularity as a duo.
2004 also introduced Martin to the next level of adulation in the form of the amazing Club One14 owned by globally famed DJ and Producer Manny Manolo from Boston. While at One14 Martin expanded his partnership with DJ Cory Ayler and the DJ duo created 2Deep Productions which led to the birth of the now infamous Deep Down Wednesday parties at One14 which brought international attention. The complimentary styles of Martin’s Funky Disco House & Cory’s Deep Soulful House brought worldwide acclaim from DJ’s such as Andy Caldwell and Collette.
In late 2006 the unfortunate cycle of unpopularity with house music in Philadelphia and a looming recession over the horizon Martin took on a professional career path in the Marketing and IT industries. This time away from the entertainment industry gave Martin the opportunity to reflect on his experience leading him to studio production allowing him to open his mind to the edgier aspects of house music. This expansion culminated in numerous recordings and mixes since then.
Now in late 2010 with the long awaited resurgence of house music in Philadelphia, Martin has returned from the past several years in the studio and began to perform out regularly at the Philadelphia afterhours club Loft 1518. Along with recent boogie and classic house influences from friend and Philadelphia DJ JohnnyG by way of NYC and recent experimentation in Tech House has increased his ability to take crowds on extremely creative journeys on the dance floor; breaking through boundaries from the excitable to the absolutely sensational.
With the expansion of social media and virtualization Martin’s recent global reach has amplified to popularity across the pond most notably in Holland, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Central Europe where he is featured on Play.fm regularly.
In 2011 Martin is looking to make a move to Iceland where he can enjoy the beauty and wonder of the country and its unique and historic culture while also hoping to entertain new people and grow as a DJ from the experience. Martin is grateful for all the DJs and producers who have helped him rise to his potential over the years and because of that Martin is always happy to help up and coming DJs who are stuggling to get infront of a crowd; Martin will give them the opportunities that were given to him when he first started.
