There are many benchmarks by which artists in todays climate can be judged upon to gauge their success; production profile, DJ skills, media presence, charisma. In a rare but fortuitous collision, the Groove Junkies have all of the above in abundance.
Taking their influences from Soul, Funk, R&B, Jazz, Gospel and Latin Rhythms, and combining them with trademark uplifting lyrics and irrepressible hooks, has led to the Groove Junkies carving out a very distinct style within the occasionally restrictive framework of 'Soulful House'. Modern day DJ's in every sense, Evan Landes and Parrish Wintersmith have already left their indellible mark on the music that they love.
Remix & Production
The Groove Junkies have achieved that rare feat within this industry of releasing the majority of their original material on their own imprint and still gaining huge exposure, whereas many artists will piggy back a more established label for a period of time before striking out on their own. Morehouse Records has become a powerhouse, and cultivated an immensely strong reputation in a relatively short period of time. Highlights have included the guys first release; 'Inside My Soul', which caught the attention and admiration of such luminaries as Frankie Knuckles, Louie Vega, David Morales, and Tony Humphries, 'Gonna Get By', 'Didnt I Bring You Love', 'Musics Gotcha Jumpin', and 'Catch Your Shine'.
The boys have also lent their skills to many high profile remix projects, for artists as diverse as Frankie Knuckles (for whom they have completed 3 projects, the most recent of which; 'Because Of Your Love', is due out in 2006), Ben Watt (the Groove Junkies reworking of 'Lone Cat (Holding on)' is still one of the biggest records to date on Buzzin' Fly), and most recently for the Pussycat Dolls new single 'Stick Wit U'.
In terms of licensing, the Groove Junkies have featured on some of the biggest compilations of the past few years, including 'Wax Wars' and 'Jay-J - Disconnected' for Defected, 'House Of Om' and 'Kaskade - San Francisci Sessions' for Om Records, 'Armani Exchange' from Frankie Knuckles, as well as albums from Hed Kandi, Ministry Of Sound, suSU and Clubstar.
Final word
There are no shortage of US based house producers, so it takes something quite special to rise above the rest and shine. The fact that the Groove Junkies have cultivated such a strong reputation in such varied corners of this industry is testament not only to their enormous talents as producers, or their unbridled skill as DJ's, but a combination of both combined with that rarest of things; true star quality.
