Janne Hatula is the figure behind the artist names Fanu and FanuSamurai. He got into electronic music in early nineties and recalls having the then ground-breaking duo 2 Unlimited as one of his first touches with electronic music. "My friend had this 2 Unlimited tape and loads of other electronic music that was huge in early nineties. I absolutely hated it at first but I learned to appreciate electronic music!" Janne 'fesses up. After that he digested some other electronic acts such as Jam and Spoon, Sven Väth, The Prodigy, and Future Sound of London just to mention a few. "All the limitlessness that I heard in electronic music was absolutely seminal," he recalls. He got hooked into faster breakbeat-orientated music in '95 when he heard drum and bass for the first time. "It came thru a friend as well. A friend of mine had this crazy drum and bass CD called Drum&Bass Selection 4 on Breakdown Records, and I considered it ridiculously stupid at first - I mean, the rhythms made no sense to me - but soon I found myself loving it. So much Amen! Tunes like Undercover Agent's "Oh Gosh" and Roni Size's "All Crew Just Big Up VIP" had an irreversible influence. Soon after that, I purchased Logical Progression volume 1 and Platinum Breakz 1 and I knew what my main preference in production would be. My drum and bass is the child of those times, and you can hear it." Some other seminal dnb influences include Tek9/4Hero, Source Direct, all '95-'97 Good Looking stuff, early Metalheadz, Dope Dragon, Paradox, and Photek. Some of the strongest non-dnb things have been Dj Shadow, Underworld, Future Sound of London, some 4Hero works, and early/mid-nineties hiphop.
Fanu makes breakbeat- and atmosphere-orientated drum and bass while FanuSamurai mostly concentrates on downtempo. "Regardless of the genre, there has to be some emotional resonance in music for me that expresses some kind of emotion - whether it be longing, anger, loneliness, joy, or whatever. When it comes to expressing emotions, I mostly see myself just as an interpreter; the music is just coming through me.
Janne also DJs for the drum and bass crowd. "I play old and new stuff. I am not that picky; if it's good, it's good, but I have to say that I still am very true to my dnb roots: my preference would always be rolling breaks and deep atmospheres. I am not that keen on the rigid new-school drum-machine style. My aim in dnb a set is to play a colorful selection, and I've never placed myself into any mould. There is music from '95 to '2005 in my bag, tracks selected to integrate together and narrate the path this music has taken. Downtempo may also possibly feature....there's no limits." Show less
