Electric Brother is Cristian Stefanescu. He is 30 years of age and he lives in Bucharest, Romania. He has studied classical guitar and played with different bands and in 1999 he started working on his solo project entitled “Electric Brother” – nu-jazz, downtempo, broken beat. His influences vary from Romanian ancient folk music to dub, and from the 70`s jazz rock to contemporary classical music.
His first band NSK, established together with Matze and DJ Vasile, won in 2000 the Radio France International “Prix - Nouvelles Decouvertes” for their album “Trebuie sa dansam!” NSK played in all major cities in Romania, being also invited to all electro festivals (supporting Faithless, Slacker, Weird Beats Collective) and also abroad in France, Serbia and Montenegro, Spain and Portugal (with Alex Gopher, Coldfinger, Readymade FC, Bossacucanova, DJ Patiffe).
In the meantime, Cristian`s solo project, Electric Brother, started developing an idea of combining classical and folk instruments with jazz and new electronic equipment. The result was an album full of jazzy chill-out pieces many of which have appeared on international compilations.
In 2002, Museu De Arte Moderna from Sao Paolo, Brasil released the compilation “Café MAM-SP volume 2” to which Electric Brother contributed with a song called “Tristete”. On the same CD there were other names like St. Germain, Alexkid, or Bugge Wesseltoft.
Electric Brother is also featured on the new “Paris Lounge – vol. 3” - the famous series released by Wagram.
In July 2003 Electric Brother`s debut album was released followed by a concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival and also in Bucharest at Amsterdam Café.
Electric Brother, features live vocalist Marta Hristea and double bass player Vlaicu Golcea. In this way a small but resourceful group started to bring together ancient Romanian music with modern stylish beats and jazz improvisation. Their concerts in clubs around Romania are usually followed by a dj set performed by Electric Brother.
In February 2002, the collaboration with Vlaicu Golcea (double bass), Sorin Romanescu (guitar), Marta Hristea (vocals), Raul Kusak (keyboards) and Matze (samplers), led to the forming of a new band “Aievea” – oriented towards modern jazz and groove, trying to make the audience feel jazz in the feet rather than in the brain. The new mixture of classical themes, traditional lines and modern beats and breaks turned it into an interesting live act. Aievea was awarded the “2002 Best Romanian Jazz Band” by the Societatea Romana de Radiodifuziune ( The Romanian Society of Broadcasters)
In 2003 Aievea released the first album and performed in various clubs or during the most important multimedia events in Bucharest. Aievea also received the award for the best jazz album and some other prizes from Romanian magazines, radio stations, etc.
Following the collaboration with DJ Tom Wieland (Les Gammas – Vienna), Electric Brother has started to work on his new album. One of the first tracks from the forthcoming album has already been released on a compilation entitled “Panorama”. The compilation is mixed by DJ Tom Wieland and features electro artists from Eastern Europe.
In July 2004 Electric Brother won the “Heineken DJ & VJ contest” in Romania. Teaming up with VJ Casa Gontz, they have been awarded the First prize in the first edition of this competition.
