d.kay got into drum and bass aged 17. a school mate supplied the tapes and hooked d.kay to the sound. after having first experiences with turntables at a friends house, he starts buying records and plays first gigs at school parties. a couple of months later the first mixtape got made and sent to promoters in his hometown.
the flex, viennas most rated underground dance club, picked up on the young talent. from here it went straight into the local dnb scene. not content with being limited to only a small area, d.kay starts to produce and come up with first own tracks. early productions end up on the prolific UK label Moving Shadow, run by Rob Playford, one the the pioneers of drum and bass. fuelled by early acceptance, though the uk scene was still very exclusive, d.kay kept his head in the studio
and made track after track. he has appeared on labels such as soul:r, bingo, metalheadz, virus, renegade hardware – the crème de la crème of drum and bass you could say, but also touched down in the UK national chart at #14 with his smash hit “Barcelona”. remixes have been commissioned by artists like ed rush+optical, total science, dom+roland, dumonde, digital, ratty and many more.
after being firmly established in the world wide scene of drum and bass, the next step d.kay undertook, was to set up his own labels. together with dj colleague rawfull he brought illskillz recordings to life. to explore the realms of music in his own terms, d.kay set up his solo label Brigand, which acts as a playground for new sounds, different approaches but still maintaining the dancefloor edge.
with regular appearances in the radio1 drum and bass chart and the 1xtra dnb chart (Uks
leading radio stations), illskillz recordings and brigand music are climbing the ladder of success (and into record boxes). d.kay is djing worldwide, with germany, italy, Holland and Australia on the schedule. once a month you can catch him on Austrias public radio fm4, where he plays upfront drum and bass to the country.
