Born in Uzbekistan and raised in 1980’s Brooklyn NY immigrant style, East – West transitions and ghetto blasters were a way of life. An early connection to music came from the new wave / synth pop, flare-up, on one side and the electro backed sounds that fired sidewalk break dancing, T-top IROC drive by’s and 86th St mix tapes on the other.
Formal music began for Dave Turov at the age of nine with saxophone and dabs in piano and brass, before settling into drums and percussion. For the next ten years, drums provided a way to fill that fundamental need for expressing one’s self in groove. While in college Turov’s talents were expressed in rock and funk bands to a degree of success gaining national airplay, an MTV video and tours of the northeast.
Eventually, the bands fizzled out and a new outlet for his talents was required. He turned his hand to Djing, adding to his long list of musical skills. His first gig surfaced in a week, which let to almost every house party on campus for the next three years. When ‘Twilo’ came along it gave Turov His first experience as a journalist in the electronic music scene. The likes of Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, and John Selway, opened doors via that sound system from which there was no return. In the following years Turov’s days would involve consulting for software companies, while by night DJing techno and electro throughout NYC. Following this came producing events under the Muzzy moniker, with help from locals such as: Abe Duque, Frankie Bones, Adam X, Heather Heart, Dinky and Magda, who collectively held up the techno and electro scene in NYC.
Due to his expanding aspirations, relocation was needed and in 2003, he relocated to Berlin, a hot bed for many up and coming music technology companies. Berlin possessed a thriving centre for the electronic music community, combining the best of east and west cultures. Business was thriving with the rise of DJ clubs and festivals throughout Europe and the US. After working on projects with ‘Berlin Music Studios’ and ‘Native Instruments’ Turov’s music production began to accelerate.
Together with NYC compatriot John Selway CMS Records was re-launched in Europe, original music and remix work flowed. In conjunction with CSM, Turov launched and ran the M party series (M-ittwoch+ M-amstag) which became a Berlin staple. For five years M showcased talent like Dan Bell, Luciano, Zip, Kittin and many others at venues such as WMF, Watergate, Weekend, and Tresor where Dave also held DJ residencies.
Turov’s original productions and collaborations with John Selway spanned a number of genres such as house, techno and even a bit of jazz. All of which being praised by media and DJ’s alike. Meanwhile his DJ audiences continue to grow worldwide. In addition to CSM, Dave also being the man behind PULL, a new label to watch in 2011.
As a producer, DJ, drummer, label manager, promoter, technology specialist, and journalist, Dave Turov continues to be deeply involved nearly every aspect of electronic music, all to serve that fundamental need to express himself in groove. Show less
