...'brief' bio of a DJ: Not only is 47-year-old Claus Bachor - the inventor of the original german PSYCHO THRILL club brand - one of the longest-serving West German house & techno DJ's [ on duty since 1985 in this electronic music genres / starting dj-ing first in 1976 at HighSchool parties ], his special trademarks also include transforming the theory of his work as an experienced music journalist - who owns a back stock of some 40,000 rare vinyl records - into the practice of his deejay sets - which again may include anything from original Soul & Funk/Rare Groove, HipHop & Oldskool Electro and finally the Next Skool of House & Techno. Due to his professional experience as a DJ which goes back some 30 years [ he´s collecting records since 1972 ], he is the epitome of consistency and genre-defying variety but also likes to sometimes specialize in fields such as US Jazz Funk and Disco Rare Grooves, Acid House, Detroit Techno and Bay-Area Dub-Tech, guaranteeing him the respect of many colleagues.
+++ Bachor began his work in 1976 as an assured Soul/Funk and later HipHop/Electro DJ. He became a member of mobile sound systems in 1982 and also set up his own club parties in Bonn's [former German Capitol] Theater der Springmaus [> Wildstyle Entertainment / The Dash], presenting the very first house and Acid House parties in West Germany. Apart from his studying history and geography, he also appeared as a journo for NETWORK PRESS, one of the `scene organs' of that era. In 1988 he moved his club activities to Cologne's now legendary RAVE Club [by the Hohenzollernring], which thanks to him and his colleague Roland Casper acquired new prestige after the departure of the SPEX Magazine-related crew Gorris/ Hündgen/ Karnik/ Niemczyk. At that time German House-Club culture was just beginning to establish itself, other important clubs being the UFO in Berlin, the OMEN in Frankfurt or especially Hamburg's FRONT with Germany's true DJ-Godfather Klaus Stockhausen. After the Rave Club had been sold to a Cologne-based insurance company, Bachor's activities - in the meantime he'd received a degree and been successfully working for 2 years as a trainee in a renowned business publishing house - in Cologne included playing clubs such as the SPACE-Club, ELEVATOR [Halle/Tor 2], WAREHOUSE and again SPACE [Wartesaal]; he and Casper also joined the final line-up of Berlin's very first Love Parade Party [at the UFO], alongside the protagonists of the Berlin scene of that era, e.g. Dr.Motte, Tanith, Jonzon and Rok. As well as doing various guest spots at the Bonn BALLHAUS - and later THE SLAM Club, then 42 dp & Cologne's KITT CLUB, the ARTHEATER, the CAMOUFLAGE and SENSOR CLUB, currently he's at the KOMBINATS Club, on every 3rd Friday on a monthly basis -, Bachor started PSYCHO THRILL after a successful test phasis since December `91 in March '92, a weekly club [doors open on Wednesdays] which was conceived as an alternative to the more and more commercially-oriented Cologne Warehouse and has been focussing on Chicago Basics, Detroit Techno, Acid, Minimal/ Dub-Tech/ Experimental and Electro ever since. Due to its consequential and straightforward feature policy including guest DJ's from the US and the UK and due to its strict underground concept, Psycho Thrill is one of the spearheading events as far as Techno in this country is concerned, to this very day.
+++ For years, Bachor's uncompromising anti-commercialist stance has provided some controversy in Germany's house & techno scene - for a long time, he was considered the exact opposite of the likes of Jürgen Laarmann [former Frontpage Magazine] or WestBam. Bachor used to be the chief editor of the now defunct CUT Magazine and a regular at EVOSONIC RADIO and COSMIUM RADIO, a freelancer for RAVELINE and BEAM ME UP. From1996 to 2003, he was the publisher of the trendsetting music magazine d2000. These days, he's an established part of the German DJ scene who is booked everywhere in his home country, in Switzerland, Austria, the States and beyond. Thanks to his long & close Detroit connections and an almost fanatical obsession with his favourite subject-matter Detroit/Techno/Electro/House [ on which he's written as an author for Philipp Anz's and Patrick Walder's TECHNO Enzyclopedia, too / also he'd been one of the HIGH TECH SOUL Documentary contributors ], he is regarded as an absolute expert in this field. Besides, he's one of very few techno DJ's who are still also available for a good old-fashioned Disco/Funk, Electro or Old Skool Hip-Hop set [ cf. his old gold retold' section in former d2000 mag / now @ luvletter.org ]. Apart from running his imprints Psycho Thrill Recordings [ Detroit Techno, Chicago Basics and similars / www.myspace.com/psychothrill ], authentic music [ Deep, Dub and minimal orientated Tech-House / www.myspace.com/authenticmusicrecordingscologne ] and sky's ablaze [ Electro & New Breaks ], he maintains his brand SPY IN THE HOUSE once again today, as his own new Internet format coming now on www.spyinthehouse.de as well as his other review section for his new medium and d2000-follow-up , www.luvletter.org , thus ensuring his still critical but undisputable position that doesn't rely on short-lived hypes and makes him a versatile communicator of the German scene. You can't live up to the chosen PSYCHO THRILL motto "There are no rules, fear is unknown and sleep is out of the question" more convincingly.
